The following letter is intended to address the March 14 commentary, “The rise of Greek Solution”. As a Greek American, partisan politics are of no concern to me but the national issues of Hellenism are of extreme importance. The commentary expresses concerns about “military assistance to Ukraine or realistic efforts to improve relations with Turkey”. Greece should be maintaining a strict neutrality on the matter of Ukraine. Athens should provide humanitarian aid and assistance while not supporting either side in the war.
Greece’s major problems are first and foremost with Turkey. Turkish officials are again demanding the demilitarization of the islands and making threatening statements. The so called reset in relations from December have already proven to be a fiction. Greece has a serious problem in the event of Turkish aggression against the islands and should be prioritizing the defense of its own sovereign territory, and the territory of Cyprus above all else. Greece has previously supported the west in virtually conflict going back to the first World War and in return has been repeatedly betrayed.
In addition, Albania is beginning to renew the persecution of the Greeks of Northern Epirus. Greece’s problems are mounting and Athens is once again very dangerously aligning itself much too closely with NATO and the United States. Leaving Ukraine aside, Greece should be more worried about the war that Azerbaijan and Turkey waged against the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh. The genocide of the Armenians and the indifference of the world exposes the hypocrisy of America, Europe, and Russia all of whom are bending over backwards to compete for the support of the Turks in the new cold war that has emerged.
